Bounce an Email

Viewing the codes used to make a signature

If you have asked for help for a problem you had in an email signature, you may be surprised when someone sends you the codes you have used, then tells you how to correct the error. If you wonder how that's done, it is a simple trick commonly called a "Bounce." This is a little code that is added to an email as you forward it to yourself. It can also be used if you receive an email that has an image or effect that you would like to learn how to do.

  • To begin, start on the email you wish to bounce and click Forward on the side bar or press Send on the keyboard.

  • Go to the body of the email page that comes up and hit Return twice.

  • Hold down the Alt key and tap Z to get this: §

  • Now use Cmd + A to highlight, and Cmd + X to cut.

  • Arrow up to erase the subject line, and use Cmd + V to paste the § and carriage return in there.

Arrow up to address it to yourself, scroll down to hit Send (or use your keyboard's Send key). When it comes back to you, all of the codes will be visible...your own, and the email you bounced at the very bottom. All URLs will be in clickable form so you can see the images and sound file used to make that sig as well. It will take some practice to understand the codes used, because the bounce will show you everything it took to make that particular email's display, not just the clickable images or sound. So it gets a bit confusing at first, but with practice it gets easy.

NOTE: Don't forget to hit return twice before you make the § or this bounce method will not work.
